Candy” Crews

Candy is a long­time Maui res­i­dent. She has worked as a pro­fes­sional fit­ness trainer in Cal­i­for­nia, Hawaii, Europe, Asia, Japan and Indone­sia.
Candy has over thirty-five years expe­ri­ence coach­ing, teach­ing and instruct­ing phys­i­cal fit­ness and lifestyle changes. She focuses her train­ing on the edu­ca­tion of indi­vid­u­als in meth­ods that will increase their qual­ity of life for them­selves and loved ones. Every­body is dif­fer­ent so their per­sonal train­ing pro­gram must be var­ied and tai­lored to each indi­vid­ual needs. This is why her train­ing is so exten­sive. This enables her to keep clients inter­est and intro­duce many var­ied meth­ods of activ­ity to com­plete a full and reward­ing train­ing pro­gram. Candy began her career by train­ing with 1968 Mex­ico City Women’s Olympic Swim team. She started her first Fit­ness busi­ness shortly after. She coached and instructed courses for swim­ming and var­i­ous water sports sup­port­ing her through Col­lege at San Diego State Uni­ver­sity. She com­pleted her Pri­mary Teach­ing degree while attend­ing at the Uni­ver­sity of Cal­i­for­nia San Diego. It was in San Diego 1971– 1973; she started study­ing yoga at the Self Real­iza­tion Fel­low­ship Yoga Insti­tute Escon­dido Cal­i­for­nia and soon began teach­ing. Always an adven­ture and travel enthu­si­asts, Candy came to Hawaii in 1972. She vowed to return and con­tinue her career in teach­ing exer­cise, yoga and health edu­ca­tion. She returned to Hawaii to reside fol­low­ing her grad­u­a­tion, mar­ried and had two sons.

She lived abroad and helped estab­lish a school in Bali Indone­sia 1975. Upon her return to Hawaii she pur­sued her yoga train­ing with Yogi­raj Sri Swami Satchi­dananda in Kipahulu Maui Hawaii. 1976–1978 she built her own Pri­vate Yoga stu­dio in Kula, Hawaii and taught cou­ple and pre and post­na­tal yoga. She was trained and cer­ti­fied through the Maui Child Birth asso­ci­a­tion to teach Pre­na­tal Lamaze Birthing and pre and post natal Yoga. In 1980 – 1982 she taught Health and Phys­i­cal Edu­ca­tion at the St. Anthony High School on Maui and began an Aer­o­bic Dance pro­gram. In 1980 – 1985 Candy helped direct the Aer­o­bic pro­gram for the YMCA – Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii and became an Aer­o­bic Instruc­tor at the Maui Mar­riott Resort, Kaana­pali, Maui, Hawaii. In 1985 Candy returned to her teach­ing of water sports form­ing her own com­pany Reef Seek­ers. She taught Hobby Cat Sail­ing, wind surf­ing and did snor­kel­ing tours for the Hawaii State Nature Con­ser­vancy Soci­ety. She stud­ied with lead­ing marine biol­o­gists through out the Pacific.

Once she returned to teach on land again she pur­sued her per­sonal edu­ca­tion. In 1996 she began focus­ing her stud­ies on Pilates. Her Pilates edu­ca­tion began with the Phys­i­cal­mind Insti­tute using The Method and Mat work of Joseph Pilates. Study­ing with Maria Leong of Body­line Stu­dio of Bev­erly Hills Candy became cer­ti­fied in 1998 through the Phys­i­cal­mind Insti­tute #25030. In 1999 she began study­ing Yoga with Linda Shel­ton founder of AFAA’s Mat Sci­ence I and II and fit­ness edi­tor for Shape Mag­a­zine. She also began study­ing with Beth Shaw founder and owner of Yogafit. She became Yogafit and Mat Sci­ence I and II cer­ti­fied. She became cer­ti­fied with the Aer­o­bic Fit­ness Asso­ci­a­tion of Amer­i­can for the fol­low­ing: AFAA Pri­mary Aer­o­bic Teach­ing Cer­tifi­cate , AFAA Pre & Post Natal Exer­cise Instruc­tor, AFAA Aquatic Aer­o­bics Instruc­tor, AFAA Step Aer­o­bics Instruc­tor Cer­tifi­cate #60302, AFAA Kick­box­ing Instruc­tor Cer­tifi­cate #94334, AFAA Per­sonal Exer­cise Trainer Cer­tifi­cate #PT557-2, AFAA Kick­box Exam­iner and an AFAA Con­tin­u­ing Edu­ca­tion Provider.

She began per­sonal train­ing in 1997 with refer­rals from physi­cians to help cre­ate exer­cise pro­grams for stroke vic­tims. She again pur­sued more edu­ca­tion to work towards a sec­ond BS degree in Kine­si­ol­ogy Exer­cise Sci­ence at Hum­boldt State Uni­ver­sity, Hum­boldt Cal­i­for­nia. She lec­tured at Hum­boldt State Uni­ver­sity and became cer­ti­fied with the Amer­i­can Col­lege of Sports Med­i­cine as a Health and Fit­ness Instruc­tor and Licensed # 12131. She con­tin­ued to work in Fit­ness Clubs in Cal­i­for­nia and Hawaii as a per­sonal trainer, group exer­cise instruc­tor, yoga instruc­tor, and nutri­tional con­sul­tant with APEX orga­ni­za­tion Cer­ti­fi­ca­tion No. 4741A. Other cer­ti­fi­ca­tions held by Candy are as fol­lows: Pre­ci­sion Cycle group cycling cer­ti­fied, Mad Dog Johnny G Spin­ning cer­ti­fi­ca­tion, Turbo Kick Box­ing cer­ti­fied, REP Reebok and Reebok Core­board cer­ti­fied, and Urban Rebound cer­ti­fied.
